Over the last 10 years, cleanse and detox programs have become more and more popular, leading to an influx of questions about the cleansing process. How does a cleanse work? How can a cleanse help you lose weight, boost your energy, and improve your overall health? And how can you tell the difference between an effective cleanse and one that’s not quite as balanced, not quite as comprehensive, and not quite as effective?
As Part of our How to Cleanse Your Body series, in this article we’ll help answer these questions. More specifically, we’ll be discussing The Four Pillars of An Effective Cleanse. Not only do these four pillars describe how a cleanse works to help you look and feel your best, but they’re also the four most important criteria that define the depth and effectiveness of any particular cleansing plan.
• Pillar #1: An Effective Cleanse Rests Your Vital Organs
• Pillar #2: An Effective Cleanse Purifies Your Body
• Pillar #3: An Effective Cleanse Rejuvenates Your Metabolism & Immune System
• Pillar #4: An Effective Cleanse Provides Balanced Cleansing Nutrition
While each one of these pillars plays an important role, the secret to a well balanced cleanse is learning how to align all four. When combined, it allows for a deeper, more comprehensive, and more effective cleanse. Bringing all four pillars together also balances your hunger levels, balances your energy, and makes the cleansing process more practical and easier to follow. That is the consummate goal. A cleanse that gets you the wellness and weight-loss results you are looking for without feeling hungry or tired. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the inner workings of each pillar, starting with Pillar #1.
How Does A Cleanse Work? An Effective Cleanse Rests Your Vital Organs
Resting your vital organs is an essential feature of cleansing. Why is this resting process so important? Let’s quickly review.
All day long your body is exposed to nutritional, emotional, and environmental toxins that stress, strain, and put a tremendous burden on your vital organs. The problem is, when your fat-burning, energy-enriching, life-giving organs are over-stressed and over-strained for months on end, it compromises their ability to function at full capacity. The more overloaded they are from stress and inflammatory toxins, the less effective they are at regulating your weight, keeping you energized, and protecting your body from aging and illness.
Here’s another way to think about it. When you strain your ankle or sprain it, your ankle needs to be rested so it can rebuild its strength and support your weight. What most people don’t realize is your liver, your kidney, your spleen, your intestines, and your other major organs function in a very similar way. When they are over-strained from the stresses of modern day eating and living habits, they need to be rested so they can rebuild their strength and perform to their full potential. In the same way you wouldn’t want to run on a sprained ankle, it doesn’t make sense to live your day-to-day life with over-stressed, under-performing organs. At some point, you need to give these organs a break.
The good news is, a well balanced cleanse will allow you to do just that. How so? By eliminating the heavier carbs, animal fats, acidic proteins, refined sugars, preservatives, chemical additives, and artificial stimulants from your diet. When you eliminate these heavier foods you give your digestive and detoxification organs a much needed reprieve from the day-to-day onslaught of nutritional stress. This gives your body some time to repair and restore the fat-burning functions of your metabolism, the energy-enriching functions of your nerves and master glands, and the disease fighting functions of your immune system. The end result is more energy, less body fat, a stronger immune system, and better health.
With that in mind, here’s a quick run-down of four food groups to eliminate during a cleanse to rest your vital organs. For a more comprehensive discussion of what foods to emphasize and what foods to avoid, make sure to download your free cleanse kick-start guide.
Foods to Eliminate to Rest Your Vital Organs
To initiate the resting process, it’s best to eliminate animal fats and animal proteins from meat, cheese, eggs, and dairy. As zero fiber foods, these food sources put strain on elimination organs and slow down the elimination of toxins. Animal foods are also subject to higher levels of environmental toxins due to the bioaccumulation of heavy metals and pesticides in animal tissues over the course of an animal’s lifetime. Therefore, by eliminating these foods during a cleanse it gives your body a rest from both nutritional and environmental stress and toxins.
Bread, rice, and cereal should also be avoided during a cleanse. When your body is holding on to unwanted weight (particularly around the belly), it’s typically a sign of a sluggish or impaired carbohydrate metabolism. In other words, due to a variety of factors, your metabolism doesn’t burn through carbohydrates as well as it used to. In this scenario, it’s best to give your body a break from breads and cereals (particularly the refined carbs) so it can re-establish a healthy carbohydrate metabolism. By excluding these foods you will also allow be eliminating gluten from your diet. This can be helpful if you are concerned that you have developed gluten insensitivities or intolerances.
Refined sugar, artificial sugar, and added sugar are all to be avoided during cleansing. These types of sugar clog your body’s filter systems, create inflammation in your cells and tissues, compromise immune function, and slow down the fat-burning functions of your metabolism.
Finally, caffeine and alcohol should also be avoided during a cleanse. Caffeine can over-stimulate and over-strain your pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands (your master glands that are largely responsible for hormonal balance and your energy). When you eliminate coffee and caffeinated drinks it gives these glands a much needed rest. Meanwhile, alcoholic beverages put undue stress on your liver and other detox organs, the very organs you are looking to rest, restore, and purify during a cleanse.
So how does a cleanse work? How does it help your body burn through unwanted fat, boost your energy, and support your overall health? It all starts by resting the body’s life-giving organs that are responsible for keeping us youthful, fit, vital, and well.
But that’s just the beginning. As we’ve discussed, an effective cleanse also Purifies Your Body (Pillar #2), Rejuvenates Your Metabolism and Immune System (Pillar #3), and Provides Balanced Cleansing Nutrition (Pillar #4).
